Rev. Fred Lyon, Interim Senior Pastor
Senior Pastor, Head of Staff

The Rev. Fred Lyon will serve with Chevy Chase Presbyterian as the Interim Senior Pastor and Head of Staff beginning November 1, 2007 and until a permanent Senior Pastor is called.

Rev. Lyon brings to Chevy Chase a wealth of experience as an interim pastor, having served six congregations – all in the Washington, DC metro area - in this capacity since 1994. These churches range is size from about 240 members to congregations the size of Chevy Chase Presbyterian and larger. He has a total of 23 years ordained service in the Presbyterian Church. Fred is a graduate of Bucknell University and Princeton Theological Seminary. He is currently working toward his doctorate at Union Theological Seminary & Presbyterian School of Christian Education (Union-PSCE), Richmond, VA.

Fred is coming to us from Lewinsville Presbyterian Church in McLean, VA. He knows the ‘Washington Beat’ and is actively involved with and a member of the National Capital Presbytery, and currently serves on the Presbytery’s Committee on Ministry.

Fred is married to the Rev. Dr. Janice (Jan) L. Edmiston and they have three teen-aged children – Ben (off to college this fall), Jay and Libby. They live in Arlington, VA.

 

 Rev. Steve Robertson
Associate Pastor 
Steve serves in the areas of mission and outreach programs, the fellowship life of the congregation, and congregational and pastoral care, including serving as a staff support to the Board of Deacons. He leads worship and preaches regularly and teaches on occasion. Steve joined CCPC in 2004 after serving three years as a solo pastor in East Lansing, Michigan, and five years as an associate pastor in Inverness, Florida. Prior to graduating from Columbia Theological Seminary in 1995, Steve worked in the banking industry. Steve was married at CCPC in November, 2005, and he and wife Susan Peacock enjoy the cultural life of music, theater, and other international events in the Washington, D.C. area. Both Steve and Susan love to travel, and are redecorating their new townhouse in North Bethesda.

 

 Rev. Lynn Jostes 
Associate Pastor for Christian Education

Lynn has served CCPC as Church Educator since October 2002 and works with the Christian Education and Discipleship Committees encouraging all aspects of spiritual formation and membership. She teaches classes regularly, serves as liturgist in worship occasionally, assists with Officer Training and retreats, provides resources and training for Church School teachers, meets with Adult Education planners and the Library Committee, promotes the education program of the congregation and encourages family ministries. She also supervises and supports the work of the Youth Ministries Associate and Directors of the Weekday Nursery School and After School Programs. Lynn is a native of Texas and has been a Certified Christian Educator in the Presbyterian Church for 30 years, serving 5 congregations and 1 cluster across the denomination. She lives in the Friendship Heights area near the church, and enjoys musical theater, traveling, and books.

 

 



Martin P. Brooks 
Youth Ministries Associate

martin brooksOriginally hailing from the south side of Chicago, Martin holds the distinction of being the only United Methodist on staff. A 2007 graduate of Wesley Theological Seminary, Martin holds a Master of Divinity degree and is currently pursuing his Master of Theological Studies.  He is also a Certified Candidate for the ordained ministry in The United Methodist Church.  As a long-time worker in youth and young adult ministries, Martin brings to CCPC a deep love for young people and energy to put a strong Christian faith into action. He has taught at the college level, founded a non-profit organization that works in the areas of human relations and diversity education, worked as a case manager for homeless people and adults with developmental disabilities, spoken on effective staff development strategies at a number of national conferences focused on the AIDS pandemic, and has played bass guitar and sung in a couple of rock ‘n’ roll bands, including The Revelations! Martin is committed to helping the youth and adults of CCPC work together to create God-guided youth ministry. He currently lives in Montgomery Village, Maryland.

Tempe Thomas
Director, After-School Program

Tempe serves as the director of the After-School Program, a school-age child care program which was established in 1987 by CCPC members. She has been the director since the very beginning of the program. Tempe supervises a staff of 7 as well as drives the church van to Murch Elementary School where she meets the children who are enrolled in CCPC After School Program and transports them back to CCPC for their after school hours. Tempe came to CCPC in 1986 as a teacher of three year olds in the Weekday Nursery School and joined the church in 1990. She has served as an usher and a Deacon. Tempe graduated from Mary Baldwin College in 1968 after which she was employed by American Airlines as a flight attendant for 13 years. She is the mother of two grown daughters and lives in Bethesda.

Ian Richardson
Church Administrator
Ian’s main functions are the day-to-day running of all financial transactions within CCPC, and general oversight of the building, its systems – including the computer network - and the support staff. He serves as staff liaison for Administration and Finance Committee, and Support Services, but also works frequently with members of most other Committees. Ian joined the staff of CCPC in 1996 after a 27 year career with British Aerospace – most of that being in the Washington DC area. His engineering background has proven to be useful to CCPC on many occasions! Ian and his wife Ruthanne live in Fairfax, VA. They both enjoy music, and have rung handbells with several of CCPC’s bell choirs. They also like to spend time at the beach in North Carolina.

 

Julie Vidrick Evans
Director of Music

An active recitalist, Julie has been featured soloist with The Washington Bach Consort, Bach Sinfonia, Masterworks Chorus, and Thomas Circle Singers and has been heard in such venues as The Kennedy Center Concert Hall, St. Thomas Church and Trinity Church, New York City, Princeton University Chapel, Washington National Cathedral, as well as a concert tour of Eastern Europe. Julie earned a Master of Music from The Catholic University of America as a student of Wojciech Wojtasiewicz and a Bachelor of Music from James Madison University as a student of Richard McPherson. She has served as Choral Conductor-in-Residence at American University, Washington, D.C. and as Associate Conductor of Masterworks Chorus (now National Philharmonic Chorale). She is the immediate past Dean of the Potomac Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and comes to us after serving for eleven years as Director of Music at St. Dunstans Episcopal Church in Bethesda, MD.

Kyoko Meredith
Associate Director of Music

Kyoko is a graduate of Oberlin College with a major in music and religion and of Westminster Choir College.  She has had experience serving in churches in New Jersey, Japan, Ohio, and Maryland.

Louise Trent
Receptionist 
Louise serves as the Receptionist in the CCPC office, meeting and greeting visitors as well as members of the church. She also has the responsibility of maintaining the Visitor & Memorial Donor databases. Answer phones, assist with the Deacons preparing lists, duplicating the Gateway, bulk mailings and other duties as assigned. Prior to joining the CCPC staff she retired from the Department of Defense (DoD) where she served in Human Resources for 23 years. She is married to James Trent and is the mother of 4.

 Kenneth Lowenberg
Minister of Music Emeritus 
Ken served as Minister of Music at CCPC from July 1968 – July 2006, when he retired and was named Emeritus. Ken began piano lessons in 2nd grade and organ lessons in high school. He received his B. Mus. Ed. degree from Northwestern University and his M. Mus. degree in Composition from the University of Southern California. After teaching music in public high schools in Indiana and Illinois for four years, he accepted a full scholarship to the College of Church Musicians at Washington Cathedral, where he studied a year with Paul Callaway and others and worked with the cathedral choir. Upon graduation, he began his ministry at Chevy Chase church, where he built up a music program including four graded choirs and a number of handbell choirs, later adding the community concert series (Chevy Chase Concerts), and such groups as All Church Orchestra, Gospel Choir, Guitar Group, First Service Praise Team, Men’s Chorus, and others. He has been active in professional organizations, such as the American Guild of Organists and the Presbyterian Association of Musicians, holding local, regional, and national offices in both organizations and earning his FAGO (Fellow, American Guild of Organists) and CCM (Presbyterian Certified Church Musician). Ken composed a number of anthems and pieces for choirs and bell choirs during his CCPC years, many of which have been published, and he plans to do more composing in his retirement.
